My Imaginary Journey

Those who subscribe to Forbes magazine also receive an occasional copy of Forbes Life (September 2009). Let's take an imaginary journey via a few selective Forbes Life's advertisements which often go considerably beyond our imagination as well as means.

First, our means of travel include an Aston Martin's DBS V-12 Volante, a beautiful silver convertible with posh red seats for only $269,000.00. To go with this, we made an addition to our wardrobe. I decided on a Charcoal-Blue Flannel Suit which "adds a dash of dashing to the fabric's quiet virtuosity," a bargain from Duncan Quinn ($4,700).

My charming wife didn't want anything new for her wardrobe but fell in love with a pair of Rami Abboud Earrings. The creator "paints with stones" and "plays with colors" to create one-of-a-kind pieces such as these earrings using gems like watermelon tourmalines, pale blue sapphires and boulder opals. She couldn't resist ($31,500 including 2.34 carats diamonds) because "they mold the body perfectly" says Abboud.

Many exquisite watches were presented but as the experts say, "If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it." One watch was actually priced and seemed quite attractive so I bought it: a Richard Mille - A Racing Machine On The Wrist - by Westime, Calibre RM 011 Felipe Massa Flyback Chronograph America Special ($85,000, 62 jewels).

Outfitted adequately, we now had to choose our destination. With limited time, we settled on a carefully chosen long Weekend in the Country, Meadowood Napa Valley, St. Helena, California. Hidden off the Silverado Trail, Meadowood is an enclave of high-toned gentleness. The muted interiors (soft beiges, yellows, rusty reds, gray-greens) highlight the 85 rooms with working fireplaces and "destination bathrooms." How could we miss? One highlight was the chef's tasting menu ($260) which was a never to be forgotten experience.

As we journeyed homeward, we ran into more rain than anticipated. This necessitated a raincoat for my wife who wasn't quite adequately prepared. We did find a Belseta Raincoat which came in 24 colors so we found one which goes perfectly with our Volante. A bargain we felt at $1,895, especially since it was specially customized just for her.

But like so many adventures, my imaginary dream ended but this kind of senior moment could linger for quite some time.
