Pledge of Allegiance History

by Dan Seagren

Today is Flag Day in the United States, a good time to take a look at the history of the Pledge of Allegiance…

Recently, NBC had a poll on the Pledge of Allegiance whether or not to keep the word God in the Pledge. It registered the greatest response to any previous poll with 86% in favor of leaving it in. Apparently it caught NBC by surprise as no doubt it has done the same with many others.

Without going into detail, there seems to be evidence that the antagonism toward God in particular and Christianity (and religion in general) is generated not by a majority but a minority of the citizenry. Or, putting it another way, an outspoken minority vs. a quiescent (inactive, quiet) majority. Otherwise put as the tyranny of the minority.

1892

"I pledge allegiance to my flag and the republic for which it stands: one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all."

1892 to 1923

"I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands: one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all."

1923 to 1924

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States and to the republic for which it stands: one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all."

1924 to 1954

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America , and to the republic for which it stands; one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all."

1954 to Present

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America , and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God , indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

I am not sure who researched this, but we are grateful for this brief history of the Pledge and the NBC poll because many of us probably were not aware of it. Critics of the results probably will dismiss it for various reasons. Historically, considerable trouble has been generated by minorities only to eventually produce destructive results. So beware of the motives behind the movement to remove God from the Pledge.
