The Deep and Abiding Love of a Father

by Shirley W. Mitchell

The deep and abiding love of a father is a precious thing. A father who loves his wife and children builds a family as enduring as a diamond. Nothing can take the place of a good father.

The home is God’s masterpiece! A father who loves God, family and country, is the stabilizer of the home. Through his example, guidance, and love for his children provides a strong foundation for his off springs to become happy, healthy adults.

The Bible tells parents, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Is 38:19KJV

Sonora Smart Dodd received the idea of celebrating Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s day sermon in 1909. Her father, William Jackson Smart kept parental vigilance over his six children after the death of their mother. Sonora chose June 19,1910, to celebrate father’s day in Spokane Washington, because that was her father’s birthday.

In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of father’s day on the third Sunday of June.

The story of Glenn Fenster, and his son Nyle will warm your heart. Glen’s fourteen year-old-son, Nyle, lives with Epilepsy everyday. In 2006 Nyle’s father completed a bike ride from Seattle to Miami (47 days) 4036 miles to raise awareness and cash for the eradication of Epilepsy. 2007 Glen biked (65 days) 6200 miles from Alaska to Miami. He will miss being with Nyle Father’s day 2008 as he is biking from Denver to Miami the long way (Denver, Phoenix, LA, SF, Seattle, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, NY, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, Miami) 8100 miles.

Glenn said, “My goal by 2009 is to have raised $250,000. I want to send children like my son to Epilepsy supported summer camps through out America and Canada. I want to break down the walls of stigma associated with Epilepsy. I do this to show everyone that no matter what disability of the mind or body, anything can be accomplished. That my son is like you and I. Epilepsy is what he has, NOT who he is.”
