Remembering a Poet of the Land

A tribute to Wendell Berry…

In the bluegrass of Kentucky
a brilliant Berry grew.
More tart than sweet,
this one bore witness
to the ground from which he’d sprung.

He deemed the land sacred.
Through lessons learned on it,
he believed God tilled the soil
of the human soul.

This one of which I speak
was a most unusual berry
that has nourished many a hungry mind.
Wendell’s way with words
wielded influence
in a world in need of his sanity.

Through poetry, essays and fiction,
his faith whispered hope.
Through a life well-lived,
he spoke volumes.

Peace to his memory!
