Siblings at Odds

We are a divided family with a shared name…

Divided us.
Divided we.
Our nation bleeds.
And as for me…
my heart is breaking
just to know
our family’s split apart.

We’re siblings
with a common name.
AMERICAN.
We’re each the same.
And yet the hateful speech
we spew
finds us at war,
estranged.

“One nation under God,”
we say
but we do not
behave that way.
We’re blue and red.
We’re white and black.
We’re deaf as well as blind.

Would George and Thomas,
Ben and John
approve of all
that’s going on?
Or would they grieve
to see us kids
at odds
the way we are?
