The Penny: In Memoriam
Posted: December 6, 2025
The 1952 wheat penny was minted the year the poet was born…
“A penny for your thoughts” some say.
And so, this poem is my way
to process what has just transpired…
a copper disc’s demise.
Abe Lincoln’s coin was born to die.
We really shouldn’t wonder why.
It took four cents to mint just one.
To keep on makes no sense.
But what will penny loafers do
if there’s no penny for a shoe?
No penny candy? Oh my gosh!
And no penny arcade?
What’s pennywise will take a toll.
‘Cause change is hard for this poor soul.
I’ve pinched my pennies all my life.
So, what will I pinch now?
