How many of us could have passed this exam?…

Remember when grandparents and great-grandparents stated that they only had an 8th grade education? Well, check this out. How many of us could have passed the 8th grade in 1895? This is the eighth-grade final exam from 1895 in Salina, Kansas, USA. It was taken from the original document on file at the Smokey Valley Genealogical Society and Library in Salina and reprinted by the Salina Journal. Fifty questions in 5 hours. Our senior moment? Being embarrassed by our parents/grandparents who only finished the 8th grade. My own late very literate father (b. 1894) never finished elementary school. Am I embarrassed? No way.

Reprinted from one of my earliest Senior Moments. Dad worked on the farm, drafted in WW I, went on to Bible School and Seminary with no high school or college and proof read my first books finding errors I missed. His proud son, Daniel

PS Did they take this test in Salina in June? Just curious.
