New Year Resoultions

Thoughts about entering another year…

Someone once said that a resolution is a promise that you make to yourself to start doing something good or stop doing something bad. Let's take a peek at the subject for a couple of moments. We could quarrel with this definition because some would reverse it making a promise to start doing something bad. But we will ignore those threats and hope minds are changed.

Basically we could say that a resolution is or should be a resolve, written or otherwise, made seriously at the outset of a new year. Since this will be read after the new year, it could serve as a reminder of how your resolutions went (or are yet unresolved).

Of many possibilities, let's look at three. Resolutions could be frivolous, serious or unlikely. They can be undertaken by juniors or seniors, written or memorized, short or long term, private or public. And they can be easily ignored, discarded, modified or amplified.

Juniors can resolve to inhibit bullying, discredit cheating, and prioritize homework. Seniors can resolve not to drive after dark, to not create favorite grandchildren, to save for a rainy day. The sky is the limit if one reaches for the stars.

Now you ask, did I make any resolutions for 2014? I did. I resolved to continue after many years of writing Senior Moments. I resolved to keep them shorter partly because we live in a society conditioned to mere sound bites rather than prolonged discourses. [245 words so far]. I resolved to maintain my web page for another year as well. And I sort of resolved to live and act my age.

My wishes for those who read these missives is for 2014 to be better than ever in many ways and each of us can resolve to do our part. Seniors can share their experiences and wisdom. Teens can take their education more seriously. Parents can find more time for their children and teachers can up their skills a notch as well.

As you may have noticed, these Senior Moments do stretch the concept of the typical senior moment a bit so hopefully a tidbit or two will find its way and not get lost. May this year 2014 be an exceptional year for all of you and it will if we all resolve to make it so. A Happy, Productive Year to one and all, Seniors included.
