Some Joys of Seniorhood

After writing so many Senior Moments I decided to let you in on some secrets…

My computer didn't approve of my use of seniorhood but that's OK. We can't be a slave to everything, can we? No problem with brotherhood or neighborhood, right? After writing so many Senior Moments I decided to let you in on some secrets.

I've said it before but many of my earlier thoughts about aging (like sitting on a rocking chair on a front porch) never materialized while other actualities have arisen. Like aging factors similar to youth as well. Things sort of piled up. My Dentist and my Personal Care Physician both reminded me that it is time for my annual checkup (semi-annual for the Dentist). However, I had just seen the Dentist to repair a cracked tooth but no time then for the checkup.

My date with the Doctor is overdue and it took about five weeks to get in for the checkup. Then, I was reminded for my semi-annual Oncologist checkup which followed a detailed blood test and all was well. No sight of any more cancer (which happens to youth as well, you know).

After asking my wife repeatedly to repeat what she said, I went to the Hearing Specialist and now wear hearing aids. But my wife is really deaf without her aids but I can hear fairly well without them so I cut corners and let them lie unmolested at times. I also was reminded that it is time to visit the eye Doctor again. Where does time go? After having my cataracts removed, I see pretty well except for some minor aberrations which need adjustment regularly.

Now, after several years, my hearing aids are not as effective as they were originally and adjustments have not been as effective as previously. I have been advised that there have been some significant improvements in hearing aids and it is about time to make a change. Unfortunately, my insurance apparently doesn't think vision is that important so one of these days I will have to bite the bullet (poor choice of expression isn't it?).

So, there's my summer. No vacation but retirees are on vacation all the time, right? But so are preschoolers and teens in the summer. Anyway, my vision of retirement with no more Dentists, Doctors, eye and ear challenges plus teenage agility was not too visionary, was it? On the other hand, it sure is nice that my fingers still work or I would never get to the bottom of the page. Meanwhile, enjoy life because it is the most precious asset you will ever have.
